I created this website so you would know

It's a long story, but this is the short version:

Vitamin D3 will increase your quality-of-life and life-expectancy.

Best way to get D3? Sunlight, nature's own prescription.

But if we avoid the sun, we still have two choices:

Choose wisely!

Before you Buy Vitamin D

What Type of Vitamin D is Best?

The best form of vitamin D supplement for adults and children is vitamin D3 or cholecalciferol, because this is the most effective and natural form of vitamin D. (It's the kind of vitamin D that your own body makes from sunlight on your skin).

If you buy vitamin D tablets or capsules and the label only says Vitamin D, you may be getting vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol), which is not the same as vitamin D3, and not as effective either.  Look for Vitamin D3 on the label.

Capsule size need not reflect daily dose

The daily dose for vitamin D3 varies from person to person, depending on body mass, sunlight-exposure and other factors. Our vitamin D dosage page offers a quick dosage lookup.

But the body stores vitamin D, so you do not have to take it every day. This allows you to select a larger capsule size, which works out less expensive.

For example, if the daily dose you looked up for your child was 1000 IU, you could buy 5000 IU capsules, and give one capsule every fifth day.

Drops for babies, please Mum

For infants and very young children, the best form of vitamin D is drops (either 400 IU or 1000 IU per drop) because drops are easy for little ones. You can add drops to feed, or place a drop on a teat or pacifier or finger. Vitamin D drops don't taste of anything.

For children and adults, capsules or tablets are easiest.

Who makes the best vitamin D?

The best source of vitamin D supplements is no big secret. Just choose any reputable brand. That's right - they all produce reliable and effective Vitamin D. They even buy their bulk vitamin D from the same sources.

These guys know their business. With a reputable brand, you can be sure of getting the stated quantity of high-quality vitamin D in each capsule, in a suitable oil-base for maximum absorption.

There is no need to overpay. Your body doesn't know or care whether you paid $10 or $40 for a six-month supply of vitamin D3 capsules!

That is why this website recommends a selection of reputable products, selling at very competitive prices. (But also, these are the brands that my family personally use and trust.)

Shelf life of vitamin D capsules and tablets

If you buy your vitamin D through a merchant who moves a substantial volume, you can expect your bottle to be well-dated - for a longer shelf-life (2 to 3 years). Then you can buy a larger pack size and benefit from a lower price-per-capsule.

Vitamin D capsules are oil-filled. The oil can turn rancid if not well stored, or if it is too old. Vitamin D capsules should not have an unpleasant smell.

Check them every few weeks. If they smell bad, throw them out. This should not happen if they are well stored.

For maximum shelf-life, store them in a cool, preferably dark place. I keep unopened bottles in the fridge.

Which is better, vitamin D capsules or tablets?

Because it is oil-soluble, vitamin D is most reliably absorbed from oil-filled capsules rather than tablets.

In fact, some doctors have reported that vitamin D tablets are less effective than capsules at raising their patients' vitamin D blood levels.

So this website recommends capsules for adults and children. Capsules may also be described as softgels, vegicaps or caps. They are all good.

Vegicaps are a little more expensive, and may be worth paying for if you don't like the idea of your capsule being derived from animal-based gelatin.

Vitamin D availability

Many countries do not allow vitamin D to be sold in shops in doses above 400 IU, 1000 IU, or some other national limit.

These limits are being increased in most countries, as the benefits of higher vitamin D dosages are better understood.

In any case, there is no problem ordering 5000 IU vitamin D capsules online, or in receiving them in most countries.

Our Recommended Vitamin D3 Products:

These are the brands that I and my family have been using for the last two years. I buy the 5000 IU softgels, and I know these are very effective because I monitor our blood levels. I am confident that the 2400IU and 1200IU softgels are just as reliable.
